Looking after your personal information is a responsibility we take really seriously. This notice explains how and why we use your information, and what we do to help keep it safe. It applies to anyone who applies for a job at Starling Bank.

You don’t have to share your information with us, but we might not be able to process your application if you don’t. And if we offer you a job, you’ll need to pass some pre-employment checks which we’ll need your personal information for. If you don’t provide it, your offer might be withdrawn. Equal opportunities data – like your gender and ethnicity – is optional. Not sharing it won’t affect your application.

The ‘data controller’ is us, Starling Bank Limited. Our company number is 02092149. Our registered office is at 5th Floor, London Fruit & Wool Exchange, Duval Square, London, E1 6PW. You can contact our Data Protection Officer at privacy@starlingbank.com.

The types of data we collect and why

We have to have a valid reason for using your information. This is called the ‘lawful basis for processing’. How we use your information – and the lawful basis for using it – depends on the type of information we collect and the reason we collect it.

Every now and then, we might ask you for information that may seem sensitive, known as ‘special category’ data. We’ll only ask for this when we really need to, and we’ll apply higher levels of protection to it to keep it safe.

We may also need to process data from job applicants to respond to and defend against legal claims. We’ll only do this when we need to, and we’ve made sure that we’d be using your data in a way that you’d reasonably expect.

Where we collect your information from

We collect information from:

  • your CV
  • background checks using an ID, like your passport
  • interview notes and assessments

We might also collect information from third parties, but we’ll always let you know before we do. These third parties might include:

  • former employers
  • credit check companies
  • criminal check companies

Who we share your information with

We’ll only share your information with those who are involved in the recruitment process. This includes:

  • members of the People team
  • hiring managers
  • IT staff

If we offer you the job, we might also have to share your data with third parties so they can run background screening checks. We’ll let you know before we share it for this reason.

How we protect your personal information

Any information about you will be securely stored on our systems, which very few people have access to.

We have policies and controls in place to make sure that your data is not lost, accidentally destroyed, misused, or disclosed, and is only accessed by employees who need it to carry out their responsibilities.

How long we’ll keep your information for

If we don’t offer you the job, or you don’t accept it, we’ll keep your personal data for 12 months.

If we offer you the job and you accept it, we’ll transfer your personal data to your personnel file and keep it for however long you stay working for us.. You’ll be able to find more details in your staff privacy notice.
