Adam Weekes is a lead product designer here at Starling. He played a big role in developing the new look for our app navigation. Here, Adam explains the changes and why we’re making them.

Article updated: 21 January 2021 - the new app navigation will roll out to all customers through January 2021 (providing you have the latest version of the app - iOS users need minimum version 1.80.0 and Android users need minimum version 1.64.0.46637).

Switching up our app navigation

We all love getting to places quicker right? We certainly do here at Starling. That’s why we’re constantly improving our app navigation, based on testing and your feedback.

Here’s what we’ve done to simplify the navigation within our Android and iOS apps. Our aim, as always, is to make it easier and faster to find what you’re looking for as you bank on the go.

The changes will roll out to all customers over the next few months (starting from 17th November). But you’ll also have the chance to opt-in and start using the new navigation early, ahead of the full roll out (see below for details). Here is a summary of the key changes:

  • For Android, a new bottom navigation bar visible across all core screens (navigate between Payments, Spending, Home, Card and Spaces).
  • For Android and iOS, a refreshed menu in the top right corner, that allows you to switch between accounts and manage accounts (access things like Statements, Help and Marketplace).
  • For iOS, no change at the bottom, you’ll still see the bottom navigation bar visible across all core screens (navigate between Payments, Spending, Home, Cards and Spaces).

These changes will also apply to tablet devices.

What’s changing?

If you’re an Android user

The core areas of the app, that were previously in the top left menu, are now in a new bottom navigation bar, this will be visible from all core parts of the app. Now, with just a single tap of the bottom bar, you can navigate between Payments, Spending, Home, Card and Spaces.

You’ll now see one single main menu in the top right corner. This allows you to switch between accounts and manage your accounts all in one place, no more hopping between two menus. From here, you’ll be able to:

  • Switch between accounts (for example between personal, joint, euro or business).
  • Access account menu options like Statements, Help and Marketplace.

Accessing your transaction details remains the same, through the large teal circle, bottom right of the home screen.

If you’re an iOS user

You’ll see one single main menu in the top right corner. This allows you to switch between accounts and manage your accounts all in one place, no more need to move between two menus. From here, you’ll be able to:

  • Switch between accounts (for example between personal, joint, euro or business).
  • Access account menu options like Statements, Help and Marketplace.

New functionality

For Android and iOS users

To help save you time, we’re introducing a few new design features within our menu for both Android and iOS. One change is that you’ll now be able to quickly switch between accounts. With a tap you’ll see the account menu, but if you long press on the top right menu icon, you’ll see a pop-up menu, allowing you to quickly jump between accounts.

With a tap and hold of the top right menu icon, customers can see a pop-up account switcher. With just a regular tap of the top right menu icon, customers can see the account switcher and menu.

Other new features mean that you’ll be able to:

  • Rename your accounts to whatever you choose.
  • Share your account details in an instant, just tap on the three-dot icon on any of your account cards.
Tap the three-dot icon on the right to share your account details and rename your accounts

Ready to opt-in?

The new look will roll out to everyone over the next few months (starting from 17th November). You may soon see one of our Starling Suggests cards on your home screen in the Android and iOS app. Tap on the Suggest card and you’ll be given the option to opt-in early to our new layout, before the customer-wide roll out.

Alternatively, if you like the sound of the updates, you can also choose to opt-in early via the Account Switcher > User Settings on iOS, or Menu > Account Management > App Settings on Android.
