How about we split the bill for dinner?
We’ve all been there; you’ve had a lovely dinner with a group of friends and it’s time to pay the bill. But working out who pays what could take forever. This is where our built-in bill splitting feature can come in handy.
Split the bill is built into the Starling app
The Starling bill split function is an in-app feature which makes requesting money easier and faster. You don’t have to calculate what you are owed on the spot because the Starling app does it for you! It’s all sorted in a few clicks, leaving you with more time to spend with each other.
How it works
As soon as you pay your bill, your transaction appears in Spending, and the split feature is ready to use. It’s as simple as that.
Say you have spent £54 on a delicious Italian dinner at Roma, with two friends. Go to Spending in the app, and tap on the merchant, Roma. This will take you to a page where you can find the “Split” button. Just tap it and the app will show that if you split the amount with two other people, each person owes £18. You could split with as many people you like.
Tap again to confirm that you would like to split. The app will then create a link that you can send to your friends so they can pay you back. Add a picture or a note to make it more personal and you can even share the link through a messaging service, social, email or text.

How I split the bill
“There were 16 of us at my partner’s birthday,” says Jamie Histed. “It was a treat. We had antipasti, mains, some wine from Sicily, beer – and a fluffy tiramisú for dessert.” When it came to paying the quite large bill, rather than giving the waiter a plate full of cards, Jamie put it on his own card, then sent requests to all the guests. “It was done in a second, and almost everyone paid instantly. The stragglers needed a reminder, but that’s easy too.”
