Good news: you can now deposit your cheques through the Starling app. In these times, when many of us are trying to avoid going outside, leaving the house to post a cheque may be difficult. The ability to deposit cheques via your mobile means one less reason you need to. And one more reason to manage your money with Starling, a bank that gives you financial control all from one app.
Who’s it for?
Cheque imaging is for all Starling customers with UK personal, joint, sole trader or limited business accounts. You may be a small business owner and have clients who like to pay by cheque or maybe you’ve received a birthday cheque from your great aunt. Provided that the amount on the cheque is worth £500 or less, you’ll be able to deposit it via the Starling app.
How do I deposit a cheque?
To get started, you need to make sure that you’ve got the latest version of the Starling app. To check, go to the app or play store and search for ’Starling Bank’. If there’s an option to ’Update’ click that button, if it says ’Open’, your app is already up to date and you’re good to go.
Once you’ve got the latest version, go to the home screen of your Starling app. To the right of your current bank balance, you’ll see a green plus button. When you tap this ’Add Money’ button, ’Cheque Deposit’ will come up as one of your options.
Click ’Cheque Deposit’ and follow the onscreen instructions. When taking a photo of your cheque (we need two photos, of the back and the front), try to place it on a flat, dark surface and photograph it from above. Once accepted, your cheque will take two working days to clear. When the money lands in your account, we’ll send you a real-time notification to let you know it’s there. Until then, keep hold of your physical cheque.
You can see a list of all previously deposited cheques under the ’Cheque Deposit’ section of the app. The maximum number of cheques you can deposit into a personal, joint or sole trader account is four per week. For limited companies, you can deposit a maximum of ten per week. Cheques deposited before 3pm on a working day will be available by 11:59pm the next working day, provided the cheque has not bounced.

Like everything we do at Starling, the process for accepting cheque deposits has been designed and developed with the latest technology and tested by our team to make sure that it’s secure. Starling’s ability to accept and process images of cheques comes from us being part of the Image Clearing System. It’s only available to licensed, regulated banks like Starling and it’s being introduced across all banks and building societies in the UK to make cheque deposits simpler.
If your cheque is for a value over £500, you can still deposit by sending it to us through our Freepost service. Once you’ve written your surname and eight digit account number on the back of the cheque, put it in an envelope addressed to ’FREEPOST STARLING’ and pop it the post. No stamp, no fuss, no fees.
