What's your 'day' job?
First of all, thank you for having me on The Side Hustle! At the moment, I’m undertaking my third year of university, studying an English Literature and Education Studies degree, and to help fund this my ‘day’ job is working at a hotel – I work on the bar and in the restaurant, and assist with any anniversaries, birthdays, business meetings, etc, that the hotel may host!
What’s your side hustle?
My side hustle is writing books and running a publishing company. The publishing company, Noctis Books Co., is still in the early days after only just launching this summer. We’ve just taken on our first client, and are currently in the the process of expanding with a couple more. As for the books, this is my biggest passion — June of this year saw the publication of BECOMING YOU AND I, my debut novel, and this December will see the publication of my second, THE ELF WHO FORGOT ABOUT CHRISTMAS! I’m currently finishing up the final draft of my third novel.
How did you get into writing?
I got into writing at a very young age. I was obsessed with books and would devour them really quickly every night before bed. I remember reading books by authors such as Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton and being so immersed in their stories, but it was when I began reading Harry Potter and feeling completely transported by the stories that I realised I’d love to do that myself. Originally, I didn’t think that I could be an author, so as soon as I found out that anybody could write a book, I starting writing straight away, and I pretty much haven’t looked back since.
What inspires you the most?
I think the thing that inspires me the most is just trying to recreate that feeling for a reader that I get when I read a really good book — when you don’t want to put it down and you forget about the world around you! Also, I’m just really stubborn, and I’m a firm believer that you’ve just got to keep writing. After all, if a book doesn’t succeed, you’ll want to release another book to give yourself another chance, and if that book does succeed, you’ll want to release another book to build on your success and give readers what they want. Ultimately, all roads lead to more writing.
Tell us about three things you love...
Three things I love… In terms of writing, I love the point where I’m about two-thirds of the way into writing a book, and I know exactly where I’m going. I also appreciate a good crime novel — I really enjoyed watching the adaptations of Robert Galbraith’s work on the BBC because I love that series of crime novels. And for something completely random — I love chocolate milkshake. I actually fear I might have fallen pregnant lately because I am forever just craving chocolate milkshake.
What's your biggest money challenge as a side hustler?
The biggest money challenge as a side hustler is probably the promotion, because it’s difficult to know where to draw the line. I think this has led me to push myself to build my platform and develop my audience. I’ve put a lot of effort into making links and connections so that when a new release or project comes along, I’ve got excellent word-of-mouth. But it’s taken a long time to get to this place. If I had the money, I’d definitely love to pay for more promotion!
If I weren’t me, I’d be…
…J. K. Rowling for the day — and not actually for the money, but just because I think it would be interesting to see logistically what a day in her life is like when you’re so busy with such a wide variety of big projects — books, TV shows, films, theme parks, West End shows, etc.
What's your favourite way to switch off?
Switching off is something I’m SO bad at. I think with writing and a degree and setting up your own company, there’s always something you could be doing, so it’s really difficult to know when to stop. But when I do, my favourite way to switch off is spending time chilling away from the work bubble with family or friends, or my boyfriend, Dan.
