Express Transit mode for Apple Pay on Transport for London (TfL)

2nd December 2019

by:

Calling all Starling customers using Apple Pay, your TfL journey just got easier. Whether you’re hopping on the tube or jumping on a bus, Express Transit mode makes touching in and out on TfL faster. There’s no need to unlock your phone, use Face ID or Touch ID. Now you can simply tap and go.

How do I enable Apple Pay?

To activate your Starling card for Apple Pay, simply go to the card control section of the Starling app, tap ’Add to Apple Wallet’ and follow the steps. You’ll see the message ’Card added’ and a tick when it’s complete.

If you’ve just applied for your Starling account, a nifty feature is that once your account is approved, you can connect your in-app card to your digital wallet straight away. You don’t have to wait for your physical Mastercard debit card to arrive.

How do I enable Express Transit mode for my Starling card?

Express Transit mode for Apple Pay can be activated on an iPhone 6S or later or an Apple Watch Series 1 or later. The software you’ll need is iOS 12.4 or WatchOS 5.2.1 or later.

To enable your Starling card for Express Transit on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Express Transit Card.
  3. Select your Starling card, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

For Apple Watch:

  1. Open the Watch App app on your iPhone and select the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Express Transit Card.
  3. Select your Starling card, then authenticate with your Apple Watch passcode.

There’s a limit on the number of devices you can use with Express Transit mode: one iPhone and one Apple Watch per iCloud account.

What happens if I lose my iPhone or my Apple Watch?

If lost or stolen, log in to your iCloud account on a laptop or using a friend’s phone and turn on Lost Mode for your iPhone or Apple Watch. When Lost Mode is enabled, no one will be able to use Express Transit mode. It’s also worth noting that this mode is only for TfL. All other contactless payments made on an Apple device will still require Face ID, Touch ID or a double click on your watch for authentication.

Another option if you lose your device is to contact Starling via the website or on the phone and ask for your Starling cards to be removed from your Apple Wallet. Our customer services team are on hand 24/7.

How do I know when the payment has been processed?

When you place your iPhone or Apple Watch near the yellow or pink TfL reader, the device will buzz and then you’ll see ’Done’ and a checkmark on the screen, when Express Transit mode is enabled. For Starling customers, you’ll receive a notification when the TfL payment has been fully processed. This usually takes a few hours because the amount you owe changes throughout the day depending on journey length and caps.

If your device is out of battery, you won’t be able to use your wallet to pay, unless you have an iPhone XS or later. Then you may be able to use your reserve battery, available for up to five hours after your phone displays the message that it needs to be charged.

Apple Pay is a convenient, simple way to spend on the go - happy tapping.
