How did you get into ethical fashion design initially ?
I have always enjoyed playing around with fabric and different textiles. A while ago I did a massive de-clutter and got rid of most of my clothes and decided to only have a handful of clothes, good quality and ethical. Often when you buy cheap clothes, someone out there is paying the price. The more I understood ethical slow fashion, the more I appreciated it, so when I decided to start The Washing Line, ethical slow fashion made sense.
How do you balance your time doing your job and side hustle? Is it challenging?
I usually check my etsy in the morning before I go to work, reply to any emails and orders and usually do the packaging in the evening and do markets some Sundays.
The challenge is not so much balance but the pressure I put myself under as I am constantly thinking of ways to better The Washing Line. I spend a lot of time reading and researching and working on the next collection.
I am currently working on making the next collection plant based fabrics and hopefully organic too.
I really like small designers/artisans who put their heart and soul into their creations. A dear friend once told me, when looking to buy new stuff, try and find someone local or small makers selling what you are looking, and thats resonated with me since.
On the high street, I really appreciate Cos designs.
