Please be aware that on the 17th March, the government announced that IR35 tax reforms will be delayed for one year, due to the huge challenges faced by businesses at the moment. The measures will now come into effect on the 6th April 2021.

IR35 is the tax legislation that helps determine if a limited company contractor is an independent business or if they’re essentially an employee working for a client without being on the payroll. At the moment, the contractor themselves determines their own IR35 status. But from April 2020, the responsibility will move to the end client. For the contractor to secure future contracts, it’s important for them to be confident of their IR35 status and to have a status determination statement from an approved IR35 expert.

It can be difficult for businesses to determine the requirements of these new rules, especially when they’re already strapped for time. That’s why we’ve partnered with PayStream, who have designed an IR35 Comply Service to help you determine IR35 status straight from the Starling Marketplace, the space in the app for third-party products and services.

PayStream’s easy to use online portal and specialist IR35 team are on hand to provide practical and clear IR35 advice to anyone who isn’t sure whether they fall inside or outside the legislation.

Who is PayStream?

PayStream is renowned for providing honest, consistent and adaptable business support. Outside of the Starling Marketplace, it offers specialist accounting and payroll services for contractors. Inside the Starling Marketplace, it provides a tool to help contractors determine IR35 status. The IR35 review service combines market-leading technology with award-winning customer service, delivered by a dedicated team of professionals.

How do I sign up to PayStream?

If you have a limited company account with Starling, go to your app and tap Marketplace in your menu. You’ll find PayStream under Tax.

You can sign up through the Starling app by following the on-screen instructions. With your permission, we’ll fill in some of the information for you, such as your name and company name to save you extra form-filling.

What do PayStream’s customers say?

Unlike other online questionnaires, PayStream can give support and advice throughout the process.

Graeme Thomason, who works in recruitment, recently carried out an IR35 review using PayStream’s IR35 Comply service. “I particularly liked the fact that it was more than just a review,” he says. “The human interaction means that the outcome of the reviews are explained in a way that makes it easy to understand.”

How much does it cost?

If you sign up to PayStream through the Starling Marketplace, you won’t pay more than if you had gone to PayStream directly - it’s what we call the Starling Promise.

In the Marketplace, PayStream’s online portal can connect to your Starling business account to save you manually entering data and help minimise human error.

The IR35 Comply service costs £150 + VAT. It can be completed in as little as 15 minutes and the status determination statement will follow within 24 hours.

Tax doesn’t have to be such a headache, technology is here to help.
