What documents do I need to apply for a Starling account?
When you’re sending documents, please make sure the whole document is clearly visible, including all four corners. We might need to ask for additional documents than those listed on this page.
When applying for a business or sole trader account, additional proof of your business activity is required.
Proof of ID
To open an account, you’ll need to provide at least one of the following ID documents. These documents must be valid and in date:
A valid passport
EU/EEA ID card
UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional)
We may also ask you to provide a document that proves your address. We can’t accept documents with shortened names, so your document will need to match the name on your ID. In some instances, we may also ask for an eVisa share code to confirm your residency.

If you need to provide a document that proves your address, we’re unable to accept documents with shortened names, so your document will need to match the name on your ID.
We’re also unable to accept documents from all firms. For example, we cannot accept documents from electronic money institutions, such as Curve, Revolut or Wise.
We can accept:
A full or provisional UK photocard driving licence (unless already submitted as your ID document) which:
has your current address on it
has not expired
A personal UK bank or building society statement or statement of fees, which:
has your current address on it
is dated within the last three months
includes details of your account
is from an FCA regulated firm
A personal international bank statement, which:
has your current address on it
is dated within the last three months
includes details of your account
is from an FCA regulated firm
A credit card statement, which:
has your current address on it
includes details of your account
is dated within the last three months
A mortgage statement, which:
has your current address on it
includes details of your account
is dated within the last three months
A utility bill, which:
is for gas, electricity, water, or internet
has your current address on it
includes details of your account
is dated within the last three months (six months for water bills)
is not a welcome letter or final bill
A council tax bill, which:
has your current address on it
includes details of your account
is dated within the current tax year
A UK government letter, which could be:
a DWP benefits confirmation letter, dated within the last three months
a poll card, dated within the last three months
an HMRC ‘Your Tax Code Notice’ letter, dated within the last three months
A Tenancy Agreement, which has been issued by one of the following:
a solicitor
housing association
local council
letting agency
These documents must include:
signatures from all parties to the agreement
be valid and in date
the full name and address of the landlord
For students of UK universities, a letter from your university, that:
has details of your enrolment, course dates and confirmation of your address, including any room number that may be part of your address
is from a recognised university and has the official campus address on it
is signed and dated within the last three months
