Let’s talk money
What’s your Money Language?

“Are you ‘Words of Affirmation’?”, I’m ‘Acts of Service’!” ‘Love Languages’ have become a key part of our vernacular in understanding our relationships, but what about Money Languages? These definitions reflect how you communicate about all things finance – and influence how you relate with partners, friends and family on money matters.
In collaboration with financial expert Ellie Austin Williams and relationship expert Hayley Quinn, we’ve defined seven Money Languages based on your behaviours: Money Know How, Scarcity Mindset, Financial Avoidance, Protecting Privacy, Lifestyle Enrichment, Extravagant Affirmation and Acts of Finance. But some are more compatible than others! A Money Know How speaker fares well with someone who speaks Acts of Finance, for example, but Financial Avoidance? Not so much.
We’ve spoken to people across the UK about their Money Language – and found that just 26% of UK couples speak the same one. The result? Arguments about day-to-day money matters and delays to major life milestones, such as home ownership or starting a family.
But money conversations shouldn’t be a source of stress; they should empower couples, friends and families to budget, spend and save for shared goals together. So, let’s talk money: we’ve built a tool to find out your Money Language, learn more about what makes you tick, and understand the best way to communicate with others.
