So Domingo, what's your everyday job?

I’m a Product Designer at Azimo. Azimo is an online platform that allows you to send money abroad in a way that’s cheaper and simpler. My daily work involves a lot of user interface design and user experience design for our range of digital products.

And what's your side hustle?

I work as a freelance illustrator. Since my teens, I have been working away at my own illustration style. I am passionate about vector illustrations and have since set up my own Red Bubble store and featured as one of their artists. My most ambitious personal project to date was my 100 Days of Illustration project. Since then, my work has evolved further and I’m focusing now on developing landscape and concept art skills. I’m always signing up for online courses, following other artists’ podcasts and sharing my work on Instagram.

How do you balance your time doing your job and side hustle?

At times it can get very difficult, but the key is momentum. Once you assign a specific time for it every day and you manage to do it regularly enough, the momentum will carry you forward. The thing with illustration is that even when you are not drawing for a client, you still need to practise on a daily basis. That’s the only way to consistently sharpen your skills and experiment with new styles and mediums. Sometimes that means sacrificing time to go out for the good of your craft, but if you really have passion for it, it becomes just another part of your day rather than work.

If you could collaborate with someone, who would it be?

USTWO Games. I love the craft they put into their games and the beautiful user experiences they build using contrasting styles of illustration. Monument Valley was just breathtaking.

And for some quick-fire questions...

If I weren't me, I'd be..

A hermit living in a forgotten forest, probably carving things out of wood.

Favourite illustrator?

Hands down the late Jean Giraud AKA “Moebius”. He was able to execute so many different styles and subjects, from comic book Western characters to sci-fi and fantasy worlds using all mediums: inks, oils, Photoshop. And always with incredible use of colour and composition.

Most played song in my playlist

‘Comfortably Numb’ by Pink Floyd.

Thanks very much, Domingo!
